About Us
Our Story
We started the Ellis McCarthur Foundation in honor of both of our grandfathers.
Ellis “L.K.” Smith, was a rural farmer with a 3rd grade education, who instilled the importance of literacy into his descendants. A man with a generous heart, he extended a helping hand by providing food from his farm to families in need. He taught himself, after the age of 65, to write cursive and learned to sign his name at the age of 70.
George McCarthur James, Sr, was also a farmer, an advocate for education and equality in the school system during the 1960s. He ran for county commissioner on the platform of equality for all people and was very active in the NAACP. Like, Ellis, he stressed the importance of higher education for his family.
This foundation is dedicated to building legacy, wealth, and fulfilling a promise built on the foundation of our families. For every child, there is a story, an opportunity to change, to be the first to accomplish, and to leave a lasting impression. We want to be a part of that journey to ensure that the hope that lives inside of each of us transcends into something amazing that the world can enjoy.
